Why LDPE Medical Grade is the Material of Choice for Healthcare Products

LDPE Medical Grade is a low-density polyethylene specifically designed for medical applications. Known for its exceptional clarity, flexibility, and chemical resistance, it is widely used in the healthcare industry worldwide. Its non-toxic and biocompatible nature makes it ideal for creating medical devices, pharmaceutical packaging, and various healthcare products. This grade of polyethylene ensures high performance and safety standards, making it a trusted material in the medical field. Additionally, LDPE Medical Grade’s ease of processing and sterilization capabilities contribute to its widespread adoption in producing critical medical and pharmaceutical components.

LDPE Medical Grade has a higher density compared to standard LDPE Granules, which enhances its mechanical strength and thermal stability. This increased density improves its barrier properties and chemical resistance, making it more suitable for rigorous medical applications where material integrity and performance are critical.

DOW LDPE 91003 HEALTH+

DOW LDPE 91003 HEALTH+ is a specialized low-density polyethylene barefoot resin tailored for blow-fill seal, extrusion blow molding, and injection blow molding processes. Produced in DOW’s Tarragona, Spain facility, it exhibits exceptional flexibility, chemical resistance, and stiffness. With a density of 0.927, surpassing the typical 0.920 of standard LDPE grades, this resin offers significant advantages, including enhanced resistance to deformation under external pressure, making it ideal for demanding medical applications. Additionally, its compatibility with Water for Injection (WFI) and Sterile Water for Injection (SWFI) ensures that it meets the stringent purity requirements necessary for pharmaceutical and medical uses, further solidifying its role in producing critical healthcare products.

Processability:

LDPE 91003 HEALTH+ excels in various molding and sterilization techniques, ensuring high performance and reliability in medical applications. Key processes include:

  1. Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS): This automated process involves molding the polymer into containers, which are then filled with a liquid product and sealed in a single, continuous operation, ensuring sterility and efficiency.
  2. Extrusion Blow Molding (EBM): In this technique, the polymer is extruded into a parison, which is then inflated within a mold to form the final container shape, offering precision and uniform wall thickness.
  3. Injection Blow Molding (IBM): This method involves injecting the polymer into a preform mold, followed by blowing it into a final shape within a blow mold, providing excellent control over dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
  4. Autoclave Sterilization Filtration: While most companies utilize steam autoclaves to expose products to heat, effectively eradicating pathogens, DOW HEALTH+ grades are also highly suitable for gamma radiation, offering a more thorough and alternative sterilization method
  5. Extractability: This metric evaluates the potential for leachability, where substances might migrate from the polymer into the medical product. LDPE 91003 HEALTH+ demonstrates minimal extractables, meeting stringent regulatory standards and ensuring the purity and safety of pharmaceutical formulations by minimizing contamination risks.

DOW’s LDPE 93004 HEALTH+ is a standout in its category, offering properties akin to the 91003 variant but with notable enhancements. With a higher density of 0.930 compared to 91003’s 0.927, LDPE 93004 HEALTH+ exhibits increased mechanical strength and rigidity. Its superior melt temperature range of 117-120°C, as opposed to 91003’s 115°C, ensures improved thermal stability. Moreover, LDPE 93004 HEALTH+ features a higher autoclave temperature of 115 degrees, enhancing its sterilization efficacy and ensuring thorough elimination of pathogens and contaminants. These advancements make LDPE 93004 HEALTH+ ideal for high-temperature applications, offering greater resistance to deformation during processing and ensuring exceptional performance and reliability in demanding medical environments.

Biocompatibility:

The biocompatibility of LDPE 91003 HEALTH+ and LDPE 93004 HT+ is exceptional, meeting stringent regulatory standards for medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging. Moreover, they are biologically inert, reducing the risk of adverse reactions when in contact with bodily fluids or tissues. This high biocompatibility renders them ideal for critical medical applications where patient safety is paramount.
